The Foundation of the Hellenic World is staging for the 2nd year starting October 2022 at the "Theatron" of The "Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre the successful mega-production OLIVER TWIST by Charles Dickens in theatrical adaptation and direction by Constantina Nikolaidi and with a renewed 20-member cast of excellent actors. This year's valuable additions to the performance are Dimitris Piatas, Alberto Eskenazy and Niki Pallikaraki in emblematic roles of the work.

The classic and timeless work of Dickens with young Oliver, which has inspired many film and theatrical productions, sees the light of the theatrical stage again in a mega-production with the fresh directorial eye of Constantina Nikolaidi, rich costumes and set designs by Maria Filippou, video-art by Erato Tzavara, original music and live songs by Giannis Economou and choreographies by Christina Foteinaki. The atmosphere of the performance is "dressed" by Argiris Theos with his lighting.

A few words about the work

Oliver Twist is the hero-symbol who manages to keep his hope and kindness alive in a gloomy and unjust world. Dickens, through this work, criticizes the miserable conditions prevailing in his time in England, where human life has little value and the many live in absolute poverty, in a society of great contradictions. Dickens concludes with a note of hope and optimism, arguing that good can triumph and that innocence, truth and purity, virtues that relate to the essence of childhood, can be saved even in an environment of hardship and social inequalities.

Plot

We are in 19th-century England. Oliver Twist (Konstantinos Tsoumpаris) is a ten-year-old orphan boy who was born and raised in the orphanage of a provincial town in England. During his ten years there, Oliver endures the violent behavior of the beadle, Mr. Bumble (Konstantinos Moutaftsis) but manages to keep the flame of love and hope burning inside him. One day Oliver manages to overcome his fear and ask for a little more food for him and the other hungry orphans and this results in the bad beadle selling him to Mr. Sowerberry as his assistant in the funeral home. There, Oliver experiences physical and psychological violence again and one night he runs away, heading for distant London. Arriving in the metropolis, he meets the Artful Dodger (Rino Tzani) who seduces him with his mastery and includes him in the gang of the terrible Fagin (Dimitris Piatas). Oliver, next to Fagin and his gang, Bill Sikes (Konstantinos Kappas) and Nancy (Anna Filippaki), gets to know the underworld of London and learns its tricks and codes. Literally at the last minute, what saves Oliver from the dystopian future growing up before him, is Mr. Brownlow (Alberto Eskenazy) and his housekeeper Mrs. Bedwin (Niki Pallikaraki), who offer him the possibility to become part of a beautiful family. And this family, Oliver Twist, longs for!

A few words about Dickens

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in England and died at the age of 58. Still a child, he was forced to drop out of school and work in a factory because his father was imprisoned due to debt. Despite the lack of formal education, he worked for 20 years as a letter writer and editor of weekly publications, pioneering the publishing system of literature in England. He wrote hundreds of short stories, novels and novellas and often gave lectures. His books have been translated into almost all languages, captivating millions of readers and viewers around the world. Directors and filmmakers are inspired by the pages of this "enlightened" writer and communicate his work through theatrical performances and films. Today, almost two centuries later, Dickens, one of the greatest writers of all time, continues unabated, filling the hearts of young and old with love, because as he himself said, "A loving heart is the only true wisdom."

Note from the director Constantina Nikolaidi

"Our beloved theatrical performance "OLIVER TWIST" continues - after a two-year break - its magical journey and this particularly moves me. There are writers who never tire me, never disappoint me, never let me forget them. One of them is Charles Dickens. A writer, intensely theatrical, who knows how to inspire and create images and emotions in his readers like few others. A writer who every time I read him guides me to turn his words into theatrical atmospheres whose hope is to remain etched in the memories and souls of young and old viewers. "OLIVER TWIST" is a harsh work in many places, deeply moving in others, also very comical, clever and with intense suspense. Just like life itself, which through its good and bad, unfolds its magic, fills us with hope and brings us one step closer to Love and the Embrace every day. An Embrace that sweetly whispers to us "Hold on tight. Everything will be fine." An Embrace that, like little Oliver, we all deeply desire.”
