The «Tholos» is the new hemispherical Virtual Reality theatre of the The «Hellenic Cosmos» Cultural Centre, with a capacity of 132 people. It is a building of high architectural value, with unique technological infrastructure, which houses the digital collections of the Foundation of the Hellenic World.
The «Tholos» resembles a planetarium in its physical and morphological characteristics. However, the only common feature is the hemispherical shape of the projection surface. The spherical exterior of the «Tholos» resembles a celestial body rotating. This sensation is achieved through the processing of surfaces and the selection of materials, such as the concentric rings surrounding its outer shell and the special lighting that highlights it during the night. The «Tholos» thus becomes a symbol of the «Hellenic Cosmos» and characterizes Piraeus Street.
The projections are interactive, controlled by the viewer, and not static. It is a unique immersive experience in the virtual world, characterized by immediacy, flexibility, originality, and vibrancy.
The construction and equipment of the Tholos were funded under the Attica Operational Program of the 3rd CSF, (50% National resources 50% European Regional Development Fund)
