This winter, Lakis Lazopoulos climbs onto the roof. Following exactly the path of the nerves of the average Greek. A house sinks, the river overflows, no one will be left.
On the roof, Lakis Lazopoulos, as a modern-day Odysseus, sinks just as our lives sink today. The past begins to knock insistently at the door and demands to take its place. The story of the Modern Greek from 1960 until today, the dissolution of the “we,” the rise of the “I,” the descent of emotions, the passage into corruption, the ridicule of the Greek in history.
Chrysa Ropa, as a modern Penelope, tries to hold the house, the child, the life that is being lost. Yet love and passion are crushed in the years of betrayal and greed.
This winter, all Greeks will climb onto the roof together with Lakis Lazopoulos.
Odysseus is the modern Greek who bursts out of his clothes, leaves his home, leaves himself; his soul comes out daily, and it is taken from him and handed back to him. These are his experiences, the life that is denied to him, the life that passes him by, the life they taught him to live as if he truly lived.
A laborer from his genes, the Greek always carries with him his mother, father, siblings, wife, child, mother-in-law, uncles, and tries to accommodate everyone. This is how he reaches the present. The pursuit of money will lead him to bribes, favors, contracts, the lost Greece of 2008, and lost dreams.
And one day he wakes up, and he has succeeded! Lots of money, a big house, Filipinas, cars, a boat, luxurious vacations in Psarou, and even his nerves are luxurious!
What else could he ask for?
The tomato, feta, and olive pass into illegality. Now the sushi has the floor.
The Laborer on the Roof is the humor of desperation, the humor of redemption. The laborer on the roof is us.
Lakis Lazopoulos writes and directs the Laborer and plays the tormented hero of our hearts. Chrysa Ropa interprets the female perspective, represents female reasoning, and raises the female voice, with all that entails!
The cast is reinforced by young actors who support the couple and complete the hero’s life.
Performers: Maria Antoulinaki, Panos Vlachos, Babis Gousias, Maria Diakopanagiotou, Sofia Kazantzian, Titos Litinas, Cynthia Batsi, Christina Panagiotidou, Angelos Triantafyllou, Chara Tsitomenea, Solon Tsounis, Andreas Fylaktou. Dancers: Giorgos Kostopoulos and Rodi Stefanidou.
The sets by Giorgos Gavala, a close collaborator of Lakis Lazopoulos in recent years, translate harsh reality into a constantly moving watery world. A unique set for perhaps the largest theatrical production.
The lighting by Eleftheria Deko creates the atmosphere and brilliantly conveys the feeling conceived by the writer and director.
The costumes by Elli Papageorgakopoulou are soaked with the truth of the characters and the aroma of everyday life.
The movement interventions by Konstantinos Rigos make the motion transcend the body and reach straight to the soul.
The videos prepared by Alexandros Grammotopoulos fully capture Odysseus’ subjective gaze as he sinks.
Finally, the music by Stamatis Kraounakis, music above words, music above glances, music within our hearts. The music and the words, Stamatis Kraounakis and Lakis Lazopoulos, unite sensitivities and feelings, shared experiences and parallel journeys, dressing the performance with power, intensity, and the unbridled honesty of Stamatis Kraounakis’ songs over Lakis Lazopoulos’ lyrics.
The performance will take place in the Antigone Hall, in the new “Theatron” of the "Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre, Pireos 254, because that is where the dream of the Laborer on the Roof could fit. A unique stage, a unique high-standard theater, and fortunately, parking for everyone!
