at the opening of the painting exhibition by Vlassis Frissiras
at the "Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre
In the presence of representatives of political life and culture, the opening of the painting exhibition “Vlassis Frissiras – Double Portrait: The Collector, the Painter” took place on Monday, 28 September at the "Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre. A large number of visitors attended, having the opportunity to discover up close part of Vlassis Frissiras' important personal collection, as well as to discover a lesser-known aspect of his creative journey through works he himself created.

The Executive Vice President of the Foundation of the Hellenic World and President of the "Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre, Ms Sophia Kounenaki-Efraimoglou, welcomed the audience, noting that “Vlassis Frissiras is a distinctive personality who, with passion, perseverance and a deep love for painting, created one of the most important collections, bringing together more than 4,000 works of contemporary Greek and European painting. He also moves from the role of observer and collector to that of creator, leaving his own personal mark on the world of painting”.

The Mayor of Athens, Mr Haris Doukas, addressed the audience, while Mr Takis Mavrotas, art historian, and the artist himself, Vlassis Frissiras, spoke about the exhibition.
The exhibition is presented in two autonomous sections. The first and larger section features selected representative works from the Frissiras Collection. These are works by approximately seventy contemporary painters from Eastern and Western Europe, as well as China, Mexico, India and Iran, most of whom Frissiras met personally, visiting their studios and developing an appreciation for their work. Within these works, the human figure and the multiple traces of human experience within the social body, the existential dimension of life, the human being who desires, longs, suffers, labours and dreams, are transformed into pictorial events, into irrefutable witnesses to the inexhaustible power of art. Thus, this section highlights the collector Frissiras' steadfast commitment to acquiring and showcasing works of contemporary figurative, human-centred painting, as well as his deep belief in its intrinsic aesthetic value, its social significance and its endurance over time.

In the second section of the exhibition, works by Vlassis Frissiras himself are presented, created from the period of the pandemic to the present day. This is a deeply personal and reflective section. Through the fulfilment of the collector's youthful desire to paint, painting initially served as a field of resistance against isolation, existential questioning and the entrapment of time, before very quickly transforming into a methodical process of introspection, memory and free personal expression.
