Zorbas

~The legendary Zorbas comes alive on stage~

A theatrical performance directed by Giannis Kakleas
starring Giannis Stankoglou
From October at the "Theatron"
of the Cultural Centre "Hellenic Cosmos"

The emblematic work of Nikos Kazantzakis "The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas" in a theatrical adaptation by Giannis Kakleas and Gerasimos Evaggelatos and directed by Giannis Kakleas is staged from October 19th at the "Theatron" of The "Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre, produced by the Foundation of the Hellenic World and the theatrical productions "Technichoros". The mythical Zorbas is embodied by Giannis Stankoglou. With him are Olia Lazaridou in the role of Madame Hortense, Emilianos Stamatakis in the role of the writer, Ivan Svitailo in the role of Mavrantonis, Iliana Mavromati in the role of the widow and a large cast of talented actors and dancers.
Giannis Kakleas is inspired by the most translated Greek author in the world and his hero Alexis Zorbas and sets up an impressive spectacle on stage with top artistic contributors in their field, in the largest theatrical production ever made for the mythical ZORBAS. A performance taken straight from the Greek soul.

Director's Note

The novel "The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas" is, undeniably, Nikos Kazantzakis' most famous work, the book that triumphantly placed him on the world literary map. Thanks to "Zorbas", Nikos Kazantzakis gained international recognition that no other modern Greek writer has ever achieved. In this novel, the author introduces us to his most emblematic hero, who now belongs to the realm of myth, Zorbas. A free spirit, untamed, a Dionysian soul with unbridled passion for love and travel, deeply philosophical with an earthly, primordial wisdom, beyond conventions and conservative social standards.

The narrative, and therefore our performance, focuses on the unexpected and revealing meeting of a young person with deep concerns and dead ends who is looking for a path to live a free life, with Alexis Zorbas, on a journey of initiation and identity search. On a journey guided by a demonic soul, Zorbas, who has the power to instill the passion for a life full of music, pleasure, dance, love and light. A hero-symbol who still inspires us today and leads us to live a life beyond the emasculating conventions of a hard daily routine, to overcome our fears and to make a brave journey towards freedom.

A hero who deserves to be our role model.

As Nikos Kazantzakis mentions: “Let's give him our blood to come alive. Let's do whatever we can for this exquisite eater, drinker, hard worker, womanizer, and vagrant to live a little longer. The broadest soul, the surest body, the freest cry I met in my life”.

This is also the goal of our performance.
