One of the most distinctive and emblematic performances of the Athens Festival 2012, “Insenso / Opera” by Dimitris Dimitriadis, directed by Michail Marmarinos, was hosted in an area of the The "Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre, where the first part of the performance took place, transforming the outdoor space into a unique scenic landscape.
The performance – a scenic poem on desire, betrayal and memory – began in an open space of the "Hellenic Cosmos", making use of the natural expanse and the distinctive urban landscape. The audience was invited to follow a ritualistic route through dirt paths and natural elements, in an environment that felt at once urban and otherworldly.
In this area where the first part of the action unfolded, an unexpected setting emerged before the audience: a lake, golden wheat stalks, the light of dusk, industrial buildings in the background. A landscape that seemed to gather all the materials of the city and transform them into a theatrical experience.
The work, inspired by Senso by Luchino Visconti, is structured as a river-like monologue of Countess Livia Serpieri – a heroine who experiences a double betrayal, romantic and historical. Her speech fragments and is distributed among twenty female bodies, creating a collective voice of memory and passion. The performers, positioned within the natural landscape of the "Hellenic Cosmos", invited the audience to stand among them and be carried away by the current of the narration.
The first part of the performance made uniquely sensitive use of natural light, silence and the sounds of the environment, transforming the outdoor space into an organic element of the dramaturgy. The experience concluded with the audience’s transition to an indoor space at Pireos 260, where the scenic universe was transformed into an inner landscape of memory.
“Insenso / Opera” was a river-aria about the relentless conflict between love and duty, social class and homeland, human existence and time. Above all, however, it was an experiential event that highlighted the dynamics of space and the ability of theatre to engage in dialogue with the landscape.
The "Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre had the honor of hosting the first part of this distinctive artistic proposal, contributing to the creation of a scenic environment that remained etched in the memory of the audience.
