A few words about the play
Alice began her holidays with her little boat, the «Bourboulithra». However, a storm sinks it and a dolphin saves Alice, carrying her to the bottom of the sea, where everything is “watery and liquid.” The fish are unsettled, because it is the first time a human reaches Fishland, and they decide to imprison her. Alice, in order to escape, proposes to become a teacher under the sea, to teach the fish how humans live, so that they can become smart and strong like them. Through Alice’s lessons, the fish learn what money is and they divide into classes. At the top, the expensive fish, like lobsters and shrimps, and at the bottom, the cheap ones, like sardines. Alice, seeing that the fish absorb all the bad habits of humans, tries to teach them that people do not only care about money and war, but also have values, such as love. An oil spill also appears, threatening the balance of Fishland. Alice, with the dolphin as her ally, tries to face it and save the seabed.
The allegorical fairytale of the award-winning Giannis Xanthoulis is a hymn to love, equality, freedom, diversity, and respect for the environment.
A few words about the author
Giannis Xanthoulis was born in 1947 in Alexandroupolis, to parents who were refugees from Eastern Thrace. In addition to novels, he wrote books and plays for children, as well as theatre. His books have been adapted for both the big and small screen and have been translated into many languages.
